Writing is the section where most candidates score lowest, and the reason is usually structural rather than linguistic. The four criteria — Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy — are marked separately, so an essay with excellent vocabulary can still be capped by a weak response to the actual question.
