Band 7+ IELTS Writing Task 2 body paragraphs structure guide
Share

You have 40 minutes, 250 words to write, and the examiner is going to spend about three of those minutes reading your essay. Two body paragraphs decide most of your Writing Task 2 band score. Your introduction gets you in the door and your conclusion lets you leave politely. The body is where you actually earn the band.

Most Band 5.5 to Band 6.5 essays have the same problem: body paragraphs that lose their shape halfway through. A sentence drifts off topic. An example comes in without a reason. A new idea sneaks into the second paragraph that belongs with the first. The examiner notices every time.

This guide shows you the exact structure that works for Band 7 and above in 2026, how long each paragraph should be, how many to write, and what the four marking criteria actually reward inside the body of a Task 2 essay. Practise what you learn here on a real timed test at IELTSArena and get your essay scored for free so you can see which paragraph is costing you marks.

Quick Answer: A Band 7+ IELTS Writing Task 2 essay has two body paragraphs of 90 to 130 words each. Each paragraph follows the PEEL structure: Point (your main idea), Explanation (why that idea is true), Example (one specific case), Link (back to the question). You address one idea per paragraph, keep both paragraphs on topic, and spend 25 to 28 minutes writing them. Three body paragraphs are allowed if the question asks you to discuss two views or cover two separate aspects, but two paragraphs with full development score higher than three thin ones.

Who this is for: Test-takers at Band 5.5 to Band 7.5 who want their body paragraphs to stop leaking marks on Task Response and Coherence and Cohesion. Equally useful for Academic and General Training.

Why Body Paragraphs Decide Your Task 2 Band Score

Task 2 is worth two-thirds of your overall Writing band. The four marking criteria are weighted equally at 25 percent each: Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy.

Three of those four live inside your body paragraphs. Task Response is judged on whether you fully answered the question with developed ideas, which happens in the body. Coherence and Cohesion is judged on how your paragraphs flow and how clearly you signal your logic. Lexical Resource and Grammatical Range are showcased across the whole essay but the body gives you the most room to show them off.

Your introduction, by contrast, is around 40 to 50 words. Your conclusion is another 30 to 40 words. That leaves roughly 160 to 180 words for the body, which is where the examiner spends most of the three minutes they read your essay.

Why Most Task 2 Body Paragraphs Lose Marks

The common failures are the same across every country, every topic, and every band from 5.0 to 6.5. If you have been stuck below Band 7, at least one of these is happening in your body paragraphs.

Too many ideas per paragraph. The reader opens the paragraph expecting one main idea with full support. Instead they get three half-explained ideas with no example for any of them. Task Response drops.

No clear topic sentence. The first sentence of the paragraph should state your one main idea in plain words. Many Band 6 essays start a body paragraph with a general statement about the topic instead of a position, so the examiner has to guess what you are arguing.

Example without explanation. A specific example on its own does nothing. You have to explain why that example proves the point in the sentence before it. Band 7 writers always say what, then why, then show.

Repetition from the introduction. The body paragraph is not the place to re-say what you already said. Coherence and Cohesion drops when the examiner reads the same noun phrase four times in six sentences.

Running out of time on the second paragraph. The last 50 words of a weak Task 2 essay are always the body paragraph the writer rushed. The ideas are there but the sentences are broken, articles are missing, and the paragraph ends mid-thought.

Dawit's Story: Band 6 to Band 7.5 in Six Weeks

Dawit is a civil engineer from Addis Ababa applying for Canadian Express Entry. He needed CLB 9 on each skill, which maps to Writing Band 7. His first mock test came back at Band 6 on Writing. The feedback said his ideas were strong but his body paragraphs were "underdeveloped and sometimes off-topic."

He went back to his essays and counted. His first body paragraph had four main ideas crammed into eight sentences. His second body paragraph had two ideas but no examples at all. Classic Band 6 pattern.

For six weeks, Dawit forced himself to write only two body paragraphs per essay, one idea each, with the full PEEL structure. He timed himself at 13 minutes per paragraph. He stopped trying to sound clever and started trying to be clear.

"I thought a Band 7 essay needed more ideas. It needed fewer ideas, each one properly explained. Once I accepted that, my score jumped."

His next official test came back at Band 7.5 on Writing. He kept the same vocabulary, the same grammar range, and the same handwriting. What changed was the shape of his body paragraphs.

The Data Behind Body Paragraph Marks

Cambridge Assessment English publishes band descriptors that show exactly what the examiner is looking for in your body paragraphs. Band 7 under Task Response reads "addresses all parts of the task" and "presents a clear position throughout the response" with "main ideas extended and supported." Band 6 reads "ideas may lack focus or be insufficiently developed."

The gap between those two descriptors is almost always closed inside the body paragraphs. The examiner is scanning for one main idea per paragraph, extended, with support. Everything else in the essay is secondary.

British Council guidance on Writing Task 2 recommends 40 minutes total: five minutes to plan, 30 minutes to write, five minutes to check. Of the 30 writing minutes, around 24 to 25 go to the body paragraphs. Trainers at IELTS tutoring programmes consistently report that students who write for 30 minutes but only spend 15 on the body score lower than students who spend 25 on the body and skip some of their introduction and conclusion polish.

In the IELTS 2026 marking approach, examiners continue to treat Coherence and Cohesion as paragraph-level logic rather than sentence-level linking words. Overusing "firstly", "secondly", and "in addition" at the start of sentences actually drags the band down because it signals mechanical, not natural, cohesion.

The Right Structure: PEEL for Band 7+

Every Band 7 and above body paragraph has the same four moves. Think of PEEL as the skeleton that stops your paragraph losing shape.

P. Point. The topic sentence. State your one main idea in plain, clear language. One sentence, 15 to 20 words. Example: "One major reason governments should fund public transport is that it reduces road congestion in large cities."

E. Explanation. Why that point is true. Two to three sentences. Walk the reader through the logic so they do not have to guess. Example: "When fewer cars are on the road, commute times fall for everyone, including commercial vehicles. This saves fuel, lowers emissions, and makes cities more pleasant to live in."

E. Example. One specific example that proves the point. One or two sentences. Real places, real schemes, real numbers if you can remember them. Example: "Singapore's Mass Rapid Transit system now carries over three million passengers a day, and the city has one of the lowest private-car ownership rates among wealthy nations."

L. Link. Tie the paragraph back to the question. One sentence. This is where you close the loop and tell the examiner you have not drifted. Example: "This is a clear case where state funding of transport delivers wider benefits than individuals could achieve alone."

Four sentences minimum, six to eight sentences maximum, 90 to 130 words. Both body paragraphs follow the same shape.

How Many Body Paragraphs: Two or Three?

The honest answer is two. A Band 7+ Task 2 essay almost always has two body paragraphs because 250 to 290 words only gives you room to fully develop two ideas. Three thin paragraphs score lower than two well-developed ones.

The exception is when the question explicitly asks for two things, which happens in three Task 2 question types:

Discuss both views and give your own opinion. You need one body paragraph for view A, one for view B, and your own view goes in the introduction and conclusion or is woven into one of the two body paragraphs.

Advantages and disadvantages. One body paragraph on advantages, one on disadvantages. Still two paragraphs.

Causes and solutions, or problems and solutions. One paragraph on causes or problems, one on solutions. Still two.

The only Task 2 type where three paragraphs genuinely helps is a problem-cause-solution essay where the question asks all three. Even then, you must hit at least 300 words and keep each paragraph at 70 words minimum. Most test-takers do not have the time.

Default to two body paragraphs unless the question forces you otherwise. Two full PEEL paragraphs will out-score three rushed ones every time.

Length and Timing for Each Body Paragraph

The maths of a 250-word minimum essay in 40 minutes:

SectionWord countTime
Planning04 to 5 min
Introduction40 to 505 min
Body paragraph 190 to 13011 to 13 min
Body paragraph 290 to 13011 to 13 min
Conclusion30 to 403 to 4 min
Check03 to 4 min
Total260 to 31040 min

Writing more than 310 words does not raise your band. It raises your risk. Longer essays usually mean more grammar slips, more redundant linking phrases, and more off-topic drift. Examiners mark on what you write, not how much.

Aim for 280 words total and spend 25 to 26 minutes on the two body paragraphs combined. If you have Band 7 in your sights, your two body paragraphs are the single biggest lever you can pull on test day.

Band 6 vs Band 7 vs Band 8 Body Paragraph: Side by Side

Same question, same first main idea, three different executions. The question: Some people think that governments should fund public transport, while others think private companies should run it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Band 6 body paragraph: "Public transport is very important for people. The government should give money for it because many people use buses and trains every day. If government does not pay, poor people cannot travel. For example, in my country, government runs buses and tickets are cheap. So public transport should be funded by government."

Three ideas, no development, generic example, closing sentence just repeats the opening.

Band 7 body paragraph: "One major reason governments should fund public transport is that it reduces road congestion in large cities. When fewer cars are on the road, commute times fall for everyone, including commercial vehicles, and air quality improves. Singapore's Mass Rapid Transit system now carries over three million passengers a day, and the city has one of the lowest private-car ownership rates among wealthy nations. This shows that state funding of transport delivers wider benefits than individuals or private firms could achieve alone."

One clear point, two sentences of explanation, one specific example with a number, one link sentence.

Band 8 body paragraph: "Those who argue for state funding usually point to the social externalities that private operators have no incentive to deliver. Reduced road congestion, lower emissions, and affordable access for low-income commuters are all public goods, which markets consistently underprovide. Singapore's publicly funded Mass Rapid Transit carries over three million passengers daily and has helped the city achieve one of the lowest private-car ownership rates among wealthy nations, a result difficult to replicate under a fully commercial model. Government funding therefore makes sense wherever the broader social return outweighs the operating subsidy."

Same ideas, same example, but tighter vocabulary (externalities, public goods, operating subsidy), more complex grammar (relative clauses, modal verbs, complex noun phrases), and no wasted words.

Where IELTSArena Fits Into Your Task 2 Body Paragraph Practice

The hard part of body paragraph practice is not writing them. It is knowing which paragraph of yours is actually Band 6 and which is already Band 7. Without a trained second pair of eyes, most test-takers overestimate the second body paragraph (because they just wrote it and the ideas feel fresh) and underestimate the first (because they already forgot the first point).

IELTSArena's AI Writing Feedback scores every paragraph of your Task 2 essay against the four official criteria within seconds and shows you line by line where your body paragraph lost a mark. The feedback is paragraph-specific, so you see exactly which of your two body paragraphs is pulling your band down.

If you want examiner-style human feedback, IELTSArena's Expert Tutor Review reads your essay the way the real examiner will on test day and rewrites your weakest body paragraph at the band above so you can see what the fix looks like. More than 10,000 learners have used IELTSArena to lift their Writing band this way, and the platform runs on the real IELTS computer-based test interface with the official exam timer, highlighter, and word counter.

Self-Diagnosis: Are Your Body Paragraphs Band 7 Yet?

Open the last Task 2 essay you wrote and answer honestly:

  1. Does each body paragraph have exactly one main idea stated in the first sentence?
  2. Do you have at least two sentences of explanation before you introduce an example?
  3. Is your example specific enough that someone could Google it, or is it generic (e.g. "a study showed", "many people", "it is a fact")?
  4. Does the last sentence of each body paragraph link back to the actual question in the task prompt?
  5. Did you write both body paragraphs in roughly equal length, or did the second one shrink because you ran out of time?

If you answered no to two or more of these, you are losing marks on Task Response and Coherence and Cohesion that you can fix without changing your vocabulary or grammar at all.

FAQ

How do I structure body paragraphs in IELTS Writing Task 2? Use the PEEL structure: Point, Explanation, Example, Link. Start with a topic sentence that states one main idea in plain language. Spend two or three sentences explaining why that idea is true. Add one specific example that proves the point. Close with a sentence that links back to the question. Keep each body paragraph to 90 to 130 words. Write two body paragraphs for most Task 2 questions. This structure covers all four marking criteria the examiner uses: Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. You can practise this structure on real timed Task 2 prompts on IELTSArena and get your essay scored paragraph by paragraph.

How many body paragraphs should an IELTS Task 2 essay have? Two body paragraphs is the standard answer for Band 7 and above. A 250 to 290 word essay only has room for two fully developed ideas. Three thin body paragraphs score lower than two well-developed ones because the examiner marks on depth, not breadth. Use three body paragraphs only if the question explicitly asks for three distinct things, such as problems, causes, and solutions in one prompt. For discuss-both-views, advantages-and-disadvantages, and causes-and-solutions questions, write exactly two body paragraphs. In October 2026 the marking standard still rewards depth of development per idea over the number of ideas you cover.

What is PEEL paragraph structure in IELTS Writing? PEEL stands for Point, Explanation, Example, Link. The Point is your topic sentence stating one main idea. The Explanation is two or three sentences unpacking why that idea is true. The Example is one specific case that supports the point. The Link is a closing sentence that ties the paragraph back to the task question. PEEL works because it covers exactly what IELTS examiners mark on Task Response: a clear position, extended main ideas, support for each idea, and relevance to the task. A PEEL body paragraph runs to about 90 to 130 words, which fits comfortably into the 11 to 13 minutes you have for each body paragraph in a 40-minute Task 2.

How long should an IELTS Writing Task 2 body paragraph be? Each body paragraph should be 90 to 130 words, written in 11 to 13 minutes. Together, your two body paragraphs should make up about 180 to 230 words of the 250-word minimum, with the rest split between your introduction (40 to 50 words) and your conclusion (30 to 40 words). Writing longer paragraphs does not raise your band and often lowers it because you make more grammar slips and lose focus. Keep both body paragraphs similar in length. An essay with one 150-word first paragraph and one 60-word second paragraph signals rushed time management and drops your Coherence and Cohesion mark.

Why do I keep losing marks on Task 2 body paragraphs? The most common reasons are too many ideas per paragraph, no clear topic sentence, examples without explanation, repetition from the introduction, and running out of time on the second paragraph. Any one of these drops you from Band 7 to Band 6 on Task Response or Coherence and Cohesion, and together they can cap your Writing at Band 5.5. The fix is to write only two body paragraphs, one idea each, with a visible topic sentence, two to three explanation sentences, one specific example, and one link sentence. The quickest way to spot which habit is costing you marks is to submit a Task 2 essay for AI feedback on IELTSArena, which flags the exact sentence where the paragraph went off track.
